“Sewing” Reroot Method by Rui STEP 1

1. Take a strand of hair, double the length you would use with the traditional reroot method (knot at ends) but thinner, with about half the amount of hair. Fold it in the middle making a loop. Cut a piece of strong sewing thread about the same size and pass it through the loop. Pass the thread through a long needle, at least an inch longer than the height of the doll’s head (In the diagram, hair is red, thread is blue).

STEP 2

I like to start at the front of the hairline and try to follow a continuous rooting pattern from there. Put the needle through the first plug and pull it out through the neck opening.

STEP 3

The thread will be pulling the hair and you should pull until about a couple of inches of the hair loop are visible through the neck opening. Remove the thread and the needle.

STEP 4

Repeat the process on the second plug. As soon as you see the needle coming through the neck opening, pass it through the FIRST loop that was hanging there. Pull the thread (that will be pulling the second strand of hair) until you have yet another hair loop passing through the first. Hold the SECOND hair loop tightly with your thumb and the hair on the SECOND plug with your index finger. Then, with your other hand, pull the FIRST hair strand from the FIRST plug all the way out until it feels “locked” by the second strand.

STEP 5

You will now have a “sewn” rerooted First plug and a second loop from the second strand coming from the second plug, ready for the third plug. Now all you have to do is repeat the process a “million” times or until the “nice people in white” come to take you on a “vacation” to a “very special place”… Just kidding, my first reroot with this method took me about 16 hours even with no experience and with a little practise it will go much quicker, and it obviously doesn’t have to be done at once! But always remember to leave the previous loop of hair hanging out the neck! To FINISH on the last plug just use the thread to strongly tie the two loops together and pull them both carefully at the same time from their plugs. The final result in the inside of the head is almost exactly the same as a factory rooted doll!

TIPS

  • Use strong, good quality synthetic hair.

  • Wet each hair strand when pulling it in (just keep a glass of water next to you and wet the tips of your fingers when preparing each strand).

  • Use tweezers in difficult plugs, it will be much kinder on your fingers.

  • Change the piece of thread you’re using for a similar one every 20 or so plugs, or it can break from wear.

Wash, condition and comb the hair before cutting and styling
